The House

House Tours

Paxton House is open from Saturday 1 April 2023. During the summer season April – October, we offer regular pre-booked guided tours of the principal rooms. Out-of-season Specialist Tours will be featured on Events. The grounds, gardens, playground and woodland walks remain open throughout the year, apart from Christmas week.

House History

Paxton House between 1758 and 1795 brought together the greatest designers of the Georgian era from both England and Scotland to create one of the finest Palladian houses in Britain.

Family History

The story of the Home family of Paxton House, from the period from Border Wars through the Age of Enlightenment to the present day, touches on love, murder and slavery.

Paxton House is famous for its Nationally Significant Recognised collections of furniture, historic costume collections and paintings on loan from National Galleries Scotland.

Caribbean Connections

The Paxton Trust has recently researched the close relationship between the Home family’s Caribbean sugar plantations  and the history of house and family.

We have an exciting programme of special exhibitions each year, in addition to our permanent exhibition in the Morning Room.
